Celebrating 10 Years of Excellence

On the 3rd of June 2014 Eye Do OHC opened its doors at Cnr 1st Avenue/M.Mahachi Street offering comprehensive eye care services including eye examinations, spectacle and contact lens dispensing and low vision expertise. We continue to practice from the same premises with more to give.

From inception, our partnership with the Mutare community has been mutually beneficial and seamless. It is due to your trust in us that we have been able to do what we do for over a decade. As we reiterate our commitment to continued development and world class service delivery, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the value you place on us and your recognition of our exceptional service delivery. It is through your recommendations and support that we are able to do what we do.We always endeavour to serve all walks of life with honesty, empathy and commit to continued professional development for best clinical practice.

It is not by luck that we have managed to grow and keep the doors open but by sheer hardwork, resilience and unwavering commitment to the Mutare community at large that we get to celebrate this milestone. The spirit of ubuntu is alive and we appreciate you for the part you play in our story.

Annual Masawara Outreach

The Masawara outreach is held at Guta Clinic in Mutasa District, Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe every November. It is coordinated by the Mutasa family targeting the surrounding community. We volunteer to facilitate the eye care service delivery at this outreach.

Aim of Outreach
To provide the underprivileged rural and medically underserved community with health care.

The role we play
Facilitate the availability of the eye care team which comprises one Optometrist, one dispensing Optician, one administrative assistant, and the equipment needed. Helped to secure donors of reading glasses and topical medications that are distributed as needed.

Brief description
The outreach is a two-day excursion in Mutasa RDC which is one of the seven local authorities in the Manicaland province of Zimbabwe divided into 31 wards with a population of 169 756 i.e. 79, 825 males and 89, 931 females, as of the last census held in 2012.

The free eye services which include visual acuity checks for both distance and near; auto-refraction, tonometry, and fundoscopy end with either the dispensing of free reading glasses to all presbyopes encountered and/or free topical medications for various eye diseases. Free Abalon caps (key partner) are also distributed to the team that makes this outreach a success. Abalon caps are also distributed to some community members as an option for sun protection.

Refractive Errors

Refractive error is an umbrella medical term used to describe conditions that result in poor vision due to the size and/or shape of the eye. There are four different types of refractive errors. They can occur either as a stand-alone condition or co-exist in one patient. Common signs and symptoms include poor vision, heavy tired eyes, tearing, and headaches.

1. Hyperopia (long-sighted): this patient can see things that are along
distance away e.g. driving, TV, etc. but their eyes need to work extra hard to
focus up close.
2. Myopia (short-sighted): this patient can see things up close (short
distance) e.g. reading, a person 1m away, etc. but have problems distinguishing objects as they move further away from them such as the
board in class, road signs.
3. Astigmatism: This occurs when the shape of the eye is more cylindrical (like a rugby ball) than spherical in shape (soccer ball). The eye then has a
problem focusing and these patients tend to have problems with any
prolonged tasks e.g. long-distance driving or reading for a long time.
4. Presbyopia: due to naturally occurring changes that affect the lens found
inside the eye, as people get older they lose the ability to focus up-close e.g.
reading, threading the needle, computer use, etc. This tends to affect people
from the age of 40 onwards give or take a few years.

Medical practice has greatly advanced over the last few decades with an increased focus on preventive rather than curative medicine. The following food groups are especially beneficial to prolonged eye health.

Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables contain nutrients known as flavonoids and carotenoids which are essential for good macula health. The macula is a small area found in the back of the eye which is responsible for colour vision and producing detailed vision e.g. reading and recognising faces. Research has shown that increased intake of these nutrients can slow down progression of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Fish is the only source of fish oils that are a good source of omega-3-fatty acids. Omega-3-fatty acids are part of the essential fatty acids that our bodies cannot produce themselves and so need to be consumed from other sources. A diet rich in omega-3-fatty acids reduces the risk of eye problems and heart disease. Other sources include flaxseeds, avocado, walnuts, and soybeans. Try including fish in your diet at least once every week.

What you do is just as important as what you don’t do; smoking is one of the things you should not do for good eye health. Research has shown that smoking not only increases risk for certain eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy but makes them progress faster too.

You may consider taking nutrient supplements specially formulated for good eye health such as Ocuvite.
